Summary
The Marine Diesel Mechanic, also referred to as marine technicians, examine, maintain, and repair a variety of diesel boats. They test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment. These individuals also must regularly inspect and test engine equipment to identify and prevent problems. The engines they maintain can be the portable outboard engines of small boats, inboard-outboard engines of somewhat larger boats, or the very powerful diesel engines of the largest vessels.
Responsibilities
Performs major and specialized mechanical overhaul and repair work on gasoline and marine engines, outboard motors, and related marine equipment and systems using schematic charts and technical
manuals
Establishes and maintains a preventive maintenance program for marine engines and related marine research equipment
Tests marine engines and equipment to determine need for repairs or adjustments
Assists in fabrication of equipment / Observe equipment in operation to detect potential problems
Document inspection and test results and work performed or to be performed
Replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts
Disassemble and inspect motors to locate defective parts, using mechanic's hand tools and gauges
Idle motors and observe thermometers to determine the effectiveness of cooling systems
Repair and replace water makers
Disassemble equipment for maintenance or repair
Adjust generators and replace faulty wiring / Repair electrical circuits or wiring
Manage annual yacht maintenance plans
Assist operations in preparing for hurricane season
Skills and Abilities
Excellent knowledge of mechanical & electrical systems, water makers, air-conditioning & refrigeration
A minimum of five years’ experience in the bareboat charter industry (sailing and/or power boats)
Thorough knowledge of marine engineering
The position requires working on weekends, holidays and the occasional evening.
